Heart Health Today by Recognized Cardiologist and Anti-Aging Specialist, Dr. Donald Zone, Part Two

By Adrienne Papp

For years, Dr. Donald Zone, of Hilton Head, SC had a prominent career as a cardiologist in Pennsylvania treating the multiple manifestations of heart disease. “If you had a heart attack and they wheeled you in through the emergency room doors, I was one of those waiting to care for you” Dr. Zone says.

However, it was while training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland that Dr. Zone first became aware of the tremendous basic research that was unfolding. Subsequently he observed advanced techniques and methods to reduce arterial plaque that have inspired Dr. Zone to emphasize the basic science, foundational, integrated aspects of preventing heart disease.

“Much of the research we have also applies to the basic disease of aging. Part of what we should try to prevent is loss of telomeres, parts of our cells with coded information related to how our cells age.” Dr. Zone explains. “Certain foods and activities are known to help with this.”

“It’s has been absolutely fascinating to see how far the technology has progressed over the years. I was able to be a part of the tremendous explosion in diagnostic methods, surgical techniques and overall medical knowledge, but now my mission is more of an educational one, helping others learn how they can improve their health and aging through carefully chosen nutrition and lifestyle choices.” Dr. Zone says. “Things like nutrition, activity and stress reduction techniques are so very important in maintaining healthy function in our cells and therefore our overall freedom from disease. They deserve much more of our attention. Amazing strides are being made every day in our understanding of how our bodies function optimally at the biochemical level. How to help our genes work best is now becoming clear. All this can contribute to a better life”

“Simple changes in diet, it turns out, can help eliminate some of the factors that can result in heart disease and accelerated aging. For example, we’ve learned in recent years that inflammation is one of the culprits that can result in many forms of disease. That’s why it’s very important to optimize our nutrition through our food choices. The right food, is of course, our best medicine. If we, for whatever reason, don’t get enough of the right foods, natural food supplements can help in fighting off disease.”. According to Dr. Zone, “Things like high quality omega 3s, turmeric, curcumin and vitamin D have properties that will naturally fight disease. Most people don’t get a sufficient dose of the right nutrients through diet alone. With omega 3s for instance, it’s very important to make sure it’s from an uncontaminated source, whether it be wild salmon or nuts such as walnuts and pecans. We’ve also found that krill oil, derived from a tiny shrimp that some whales feed on, is a very high quality, uncontaminated and abundant source of omega3s.

“Vitamin E, which is now known to be at least 8 different identifiable compounds, is also a well-known nutrient that can help minimize the cell damage that occurs though stress, pollution and the toxins and chemicals present in many processed foods. Evidence has shown that some forms of vitamin E (tocotrienols in certain formulations) are especially helpful. Not to be overlooked is the importance of maintaining a heathy gut. Much of our immunity stems from what occurs in our intestinal system. Adding fiber and probiotics to our nutrition program is a good move!”

“We strive to markedly reduce our intake of trans fats since they have been shown to be detrimental to our health. A better fat, and one that is part of the very healthy Mediterranean diet, is extra virgin olive oil, the type produced without chemical solvents. Avocados have also proven to contain very healthy fats. “I try to eat some avocado every day.” Dr. Zone says.

Dr. Zone’s recommendations are more extensive than we can detail in this article, He has a solid and revolutionary approach which is addressed on his pioneering site

Dr. Donald Zone

It’s all part of his comprehensive program to suggest a healthy way of living through proper nutrition, activity, attitude and stress reduction, all of which can help us age as well as possible and diminish threats to our heart health. The best way to get an overview of Dr. Zone’s heart health program is to read his book, Heart Health Today: 6 Current Ways to Improve Our Heart Health.
