Sundance at its best has always been a film festival and market where filmmakers, movers and shakers gather, far away from the power alleys of Hollywood with clear focus on art and talent. Sundance is also a barometer of where the film industry is trending in the New Year. And for Sundance 2010, the convergence of independent film and technology gave us a little peek at what may be coming in the future.
Stars have long been part of Sundance’s allure, but some of the big names in 2010 attended electronically, like Natalie Portman who introduced Hesher, also her directing debut, via video from New York. Ryan Gosling appeared to promote Blue Valentine, but his interaction with fans through the movie’s Twitter account created almost as much excitement as the movie.
While Sundance is always the place to showcase independent films, the festival is also creating access for people who can’t attend the event, sponsoring a new program called Sundance Film Festival USA. Howl (about the early life of Allen Ginsberg), The Company Men starring Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper, and The Runaways (starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett) were among the pictures that screened in locations around the country, and also on The Sundance Channel as they premiered at the festival.
With Robert Redford’s creative vision and the institute’s grants and creative programs, Sundance continues to be the country’s premiere showcase for independent films,. Now it’s also showing the way by extending its reach with new technology in partnership with online services like YouTube, the use of Twitter, and video links that bring the excitement of independent filmmaking to so many more people than originally had access to it. Here comes the new century with its marvelous technology mix showing the good, the bad and the ugly all at the same time, – a topic of which has been addressed in numerous films this year again. Only if we could use technology only for the good and leave the bad and the ugly out of the equation, only if the alerting messages would gain the active attention of our arrogant politicians and other hard-core capitalists, Sundance would have fulfilled its original intention, which is to bring attention to important questions through creative talent not recognized by the machinery of Hollywood.
