In a star-studded gala ceremony, the International Press Academy celebrated the distinguished accomplishments of artists in thirty-eight categories last Sunday night at the 18th Annual Satellite™ Awards held at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City. “12 Years a Slave” received Motion Picture and Director honors, while “Dallas Buyers Club’s” Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, and Jared Leto won their acting categories — but in something of an upset June Squibb beat out both Lupita Nyong’o and Jennifer Lawrence, winning Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Nebraska.
Steve McQueen won Best Director for “12 Years a Slave,” and David O. Russell and Eric Singer won Best Original Screenplay for “American Hustle.” “Gravity” picked up the most trophies in the film category, a total of three, winning awards for the musical score by Steven Price, its visual effects and sound.
Among the television award winners were “Breaking Bad” and “Orange is the New Black.” Bryan Cranston won for Best Actor, Drama, and Taylor Schilling received an award for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical. “Game of Thrones” was honored as best genre series.
The glamorous event also paid tribute to its Special Achievement honorees, Mike Medavoy (Mary Pickford Award), Garrett Brown (Tesla Award), Guillermo del Toro (Auteur Award), Gabrielle Tana (Independent Producer of the Year Award), and Ryan Coogler (Honorary Satellite Award).
Other honorees included “Nebraska,” Motion Picture, Ensemble Award; “Orange is the New Black,” Television, Ensemble Award, Michael B. Jordan, Breakthrough Performance Award, and Sophie Nelisse, Breakthrough Performance Award.
The International Press Academy (IPA) is a global media association of domestic and foreign entertainment journalists in print, TV, radio, broadcast, and online outlets; including critics, interviewers, reviewers, bloggers, and photographers. The International Press Academy is an entertainment media association with voting members worldwide who represent domestic and foreign markets via print, television, radio, blogs, and other content platforms for virtually every notable outlet.
Each year the IPA honors artistic excellence in the areas of Motion Pictures, Television, Radio, and New Media via the Satellite® Awards. One of the primary goals of The Satellite™ Awards presentation is to celebrate new works from both established and emerging independent filmmakers, giving them access to an audience that would otherwise never receive exposure to their creativity. Since 1996, when the Satellite® Awards* were established, the award categories have honored not only achievement in motion pictures and television, but also the interactive and digital arts.
Alongside traditional studio blockbusters, the IPA highlights international films, honoring cinema from around the globe, as well as low-budget independent releases.
